A direct manager is directly connected to the employee. There are 3 areas in which you can change this:
Configuration → People → Choose an employee → Primary Tab → Organization structure → Edit → Save
Configuration → People → Choose an employee → Administration → Roles → Edit → Save
Configuration → Roles →Assign roles
