Calamari does not watch you in real time. Your manager cannot see where you are. Your location outside the workplace is not stored anywhere. The system only records that you arrived at work and that you left work.
What is geofencing and how does it work?
Imagine that your workplace is surrounded by an invisible line, like a boundary on a map. The technology that makes this possible is called geofencing. When your phone crosses this line, the system can register that event.
It is important to know that this boundary is monitored not by Calamari, but by your phone’s operating system - Android or iOS. Calamari receives only a short notification that you have crossed the work area boundary. No other location data is sent to the app.
How does location work on Android vs. iOS?
Android | iOS |
The phone’s operating system monitors geofencing in the background. When you enter or leave the work area, it sends a notification to the Calamari app. The app receives this notification and registers the event. Your location outside the defined area is not stored anywhere. | The principle is the same as on Android. The only difference is that when you open the app, it checks your current location once to determine whether you are already within the work area. This location is not stored - it is used only for this single check. |
What location-related events does Calamari register, and what does it not register?
✅ Work start and end times - similar to a traditional attendance list.
✅ The location where work was started and ended - according to the company’s Calamari account settings.
❌ Location outside the work area is not stored - no addresses, routes, or movement history.
❌ The manager does not have access to the employee’s current location - they can only see registration times.
❌ Location data outside the work area is not sent to Calamari servers - the app does not process it at all.

Does Calamari track me all day?
Does Calamari track me all day?
No. Calamari does not work like a continuous GPS tracking tool.
Location is used only when starting or ending work, checking whether you are within the defined area, or receiving information that you have entered or left such an area.
Calamari does not save your location every few minutes and does not create a movement history.
Can my manager check where I am right now?
Can my manager check where I am right now?
No. Calamari does not give managers live access to an employee’s location.
A manager can see information related to time registration, for example the start and end time of work and the place where work was started or ended, if the company uses time tracking with location.
However, this does not mean that the manager can see where the employee is at a given moment. Calamari does not show an employee’s current location on a map and is not used to track them in real time.
Can anyone track what I do during the day?
Can anyone track what I do during the day?
No. Calamari is not used to observe employees during the day.
The system does not show where you go, where you take a break, which route you take home, or where you are after work. Location is used only in connection with time registration, for example when clicking Start or Stop, or when entering or leaving a defined area.
Does Calamari save my route or location history?
Does Calamari save my route or location history?
No. Calamari does not save an employee’s route or location history.
The system does not store information about where an employee is outside the defined geofencing area.
Why does the app ask for “Always” location access if Calamari does not track me all day?
Why does the app ask for “Always” location access if Calamari does not track me all day?
For automatic geofencing, the app must be able to receive information that the device has entered or left the defined area even when the app is not open on the phone screen.
This requirement comes from the way Android and iOS work. If an app is supposed to automatically react to a location change, the phone’s operating system requires background location permission, meaning “Always” access.
Without this permission, the phone may not pass information to the app that the device has entered or left the work area. As a result, automatic start or end of work may not work correctly.
“Always” access does not mean that Calamari saves your location throughout the day. The app needs this permission to handle a specific event: entering or leaving the defined area. Calamari does not save your route or your location outside the defined zone.
Does Calamari save my location outside the defined area?
Does Calamari save my location outside the defined area?
No. Location outside the defined area is not saved in Calamari. In geofencing, what matters is the event of crossing the zone boundary. You can compare it to an entrance gate: the system knows that someone entered or left, but it does not save where that person came from or where they went afterward.
